Buttonhole Stitch Family

Buttonhole Stitch

This is a simple and easy stitch used in filling a flower, shading methods and peacock feathers.

Draw two lines and start from the bottom line.

Put a long chain touching the first/top line.

Pull the thread towards the bottom line to become a knot and the adjust it and put a lock chain.

Finally put a small chain stitch next to it to form the button hole stitch.

Continue the same process of long chain touching the first line and pull it back towards the bottom line to become a knot and put a lock chain and then a small chain stitch.

This is slightly different from the satin filling stitch as just a small chain is added extra in button hole stitch. Maintain the same distance between each stitch so the final outlook is neat.

Wave button hole stitch

Draw four lines and start from the first line.

Put a long chain touching the second line and pull it back towards the first line as it becomes a knot and then put a lock chain and a small chain stitch.

Next put a long chain touching the third line and pull it back towards the first line to become a knot and put a lock chain and a small chain stitch.

Finally put a long chain touching the fourth line and pull it back towards the first line to become a knot and then put a chain stitch.

Similarly now complete the same process with the third line and then the second line to complete one wave.

Follow the same process to complete the wave button hole stitch.

This stitch is commonly used for filling a design like flowers and to create shading of different colours for the flowers. The final look of the stitch is shown in below picture.

Double Buttonhole Stitch

Draw three lines for this stitch. Start with the centre line and put a long chain touching the first line and pull it back towards the centre line to form a knot and put a lock chain.

Next put a long chain touching the third line and pull it back towards the centre line and put a lock chain and then a small chain.

Next put a long chain touching the first line and pull it back to the centre line to form a knot and a long chain to the third line and pull it back towards the centre line to form a knot and put a small chain.

Continue the same process to complete the double button hole stitch. All the lock chain and smal chain should be in the centre line. This is again similar to the feather stitch. The final look of the stitch is shown in below picture.

Wheel Buttonhole Stitch Out

Draw a outer circle and a inner circle.

Start with the outer circle and put a long chain touching the inner circle and pull it back towards the outer circle as it becomes a knot and put a small chain.

Cotinue the same process of buttonhole Stitch in the circle to complete the wheel Buttonhole Stitch Out.

The final look of the stitch is shown in below picture.

Wheel Buttonhole Stitch In

Draw a outer circle and a inner circle. Start with the inner circle and put a long chain touching the outer circle and pull it back towards the inner circle as it becomes a knot and put a very small chain stitch.

Cotinue the same process of buttonhole Stitch in the circle to complete the wheel Buttonhole Stitch Out.

The final look of the stitch is shown in below picture.

You can also try the same technique in different shapes like the heart shape and mango shape and try both Wheel Buttonhole Stitch Out and In.

Refer the picture to try the different shapes. Also you can try in the flower with petals for outer line and circle for inner line or the same flower petals for inner line

You can also try your own creative shapes and design and try button hole stitch in it.

Here is a idea with the combination of wheel Buttonhole Stitch In and chain stitch to create a simple flower design.

Start with the wheel Buttonhole Stitch In as shown in pictures step and step.

Complete the wheel Buttonhole Stitch like shown in picture and put a knot.

Now put small chain stitches to form a petal like shown in picture.

Complete all the petals to get the flower.

Draw the petals and flowes of equal size and shapes when you try it for blouses so it looks even and near. Add a bead in the centre to hide the hole that is formed in the centre and also to add extra beauty and finishing for the flower.

You can also try different shapes like the lotus petal shape or the heart shape for different flowers.

Here is a picture for activity where you need to find out how the design is done and recreate the same and share your pictures in the class group.

I will explain the reason for this activity and how it is done in the next video.
