Tasty and Healthy Tomato Rasam Recipe

Tomato rasam is a beloved South Indian dish that's not only delicious but also packed with health benefits. This flavorful soup is made with a blend of tangy tamarind, ripe tomatoes, aromatic spices, and the goodness of garlic and coriander leaves. In this blog, we'll take you through a step-by-step guide to creating a mouthwatering and nutritious tomato rasam.

Ingredients:

- Tamarind pulp

- Ripe tomatoes

- Oil

- Pepper balls

- Garlic cloves

- Siragam (cumin seeds)

- Red chilli

- Curry leaves

- Coriander leaves

- Rasam powder

- Salt

- Water

- Turmeric powder

- Hing (asafoetida)

- Kadugu (mustard seeds)

- Vadagam (a blend of dried spices)

Instructions:

1. Prepping the Tamarind: Start by soaking tamarind in water. Once softened, filter the tamarind juice and set it aside.

2. Tomato Preparation: In a pan, heat some oil and fry 3-4 ripe tomatoes until they become soft and mushy. Smash them and keep the unsmashed tomato aside. In a mixer jar, combine the unsmashed tomato, pepper balls, garlic cloves, siragam, red chilli, curry leaves, and coriander leaves. Grind them into a fine paste.

3. Mixing the Masala: Add the ground masala mixture to the tamarind juice vessel, along with the smashed tomato juice. Add coriander leaves and Curry leaves. Mix in the rasam powder and salt to taste. Add water as needed to achieve the desired consistency.

4. Tempering: In a separate pan, heat some oil. Add kadugu (mustard seeds) and allow them to splutter and release their flavors. Then, add crushed garlic cloves, vadagam, Turmeric Powder and Hing and fry until they turn golden brown.

5. Bringing It All Together: Pour the mixture which is ready into the pan. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

6. Cooking the Rasam: Place the vessel on low heat, close it with a lid, and let it cook for a few minutes. Wait until it forms a froth and starts to boil. Be mindful not to overcook the rasam; it should only boil once.

7. Serving: Once the rasam is ready, turn off the flame. Your delicious and aromatic tomato rasam is now ready to serve. Enjoy it piping hot with steamed rice.

Conclusion:

This homemade tomato rasam recipe combines the zesty flavors of tomatoes with a medley of spices to create a dish that's both tantalizing to the taste buds and beneficial for your health. Give it a try, and savor the delightful blend of flavors in this classic South Indian dish.
